Lisa and Freddy Fletcher Arlyn Studios |
||||
Lisa and Freddy Fletcher with Austin's Arlyn Studios were interviewed by MOMSR's Directors Chris and Martin Theophilus. The interviews include Lisa and Freddy's histories and the history of the building Arlyn occupies.
The Austin Opera House, was also known as the Terrace Motel and Convention Center, the Austin Convention Center, the Texas Opera House and the Austin Opry House. Willie Nelson lived in one of the Terrace apartments when he moved to Austin from Nashville. Ray Benson and Asleep At The Wheel officed in the Terrace apartments and in the area now occupied by Arlyn Studios.
Freddy's Mom Bobbie Nelson played piano in the restaurant that was part of the Terrace complex. So the building and Arlyn have a rich history, as well as a world class studio.
Arlyn has hosted performers including Bonnie Raitt, Frank Sinatra, Indigo Girls, Sublime, Neil Young, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and many more. Russell Crowe completed his album in Arlyn just after he filmed Gladiator.
Freddy also initiated the creation of ACL Live and the Moody Theater. Most recently Arlyn has begun shooting a series of video interviews hosted by Willie Nelson. The first segment included Dan Rather interviewing Willie and Merle Haggard.

Lisa Fletcher was interview by Chris and Martin Theophilus (Phantom Productions, Inc.) for the Museum of Magnetic Sound Recording. Lisa was providing a tour to some Arlyn visitors prior to the interview, so parts of her interview for the Arlyn Studio video were incorporated with the tour. Our Museum greatly appreciates Lisa and Freddy sharing the Aryln Studios story with our Museum. Photo to right - Will Bridges, Lisa Fletcher and T. Arlyn Studios Completes Redesign
By Barbara Schultz
Last summer, Arlyn Studios (arlynstudios.com) put the finishing touches on this refurbished A room (pictured). Redesigned by Steven Durr (who designed the studio originally in 1984), the studio features a unique hybrid console.
“After many months of ideas and designs by Freddy [Fletcher, co-owner] and our chief engineer Jacob Sciba, and Harley Baker of Audioelectronics in Dallas, and many, many months of intricate hard work by Audioelectronics and Jacob, we have completely ‘married’ our vintage Neve and vintage API with a custom center section by Fred Hill of Nashville,” says studio co-owner Lisa Fletcher.
The 7,000-square-foot Arlyn occupies the historic Austin Opera House building and now offers expanded facilities, including an SSL 4048 G+-equipped B room that the owners and Durr completed just before SXSW 2013.
