The "UHER works Munich GmbH" were established in 1952 and the first tape recorder was released in 1953.
In 1957 10,000 were built.
In 1966 Uher employed 1500 people and produced 180,000 units. (Uher engineer - right)
The Uher "Reporter" series were sold from1961 into the 1990's. The Uher tape recorders were imported to the US by Martel.
Martel was founded in 1957 and was one of the largest dictation and transcription companies in America.
Martel distributed their own brand recorders from Japan under the Martel and Telmar brands.
Martel was contacted to supply our 37th President, Richard MilhousNixon with tape recorders for the white house.
Subsequently, Martel was required by congress to testify during the Water Gate scandal.
While the recordings were recorded on the Sony TC-800B, Nixon played them back and reviewed them on a Uher 5000.
1960 - The Chicago Parts Show will mark the first appearance for two new tape recorders produced by the Uher Tape Recording Company of West Germany, whose sate U. S. agents are Warren Weiss Associates.
1965 - MARTEL ELECTRONICS, West Los Angeles, Calif., has added the Uher 6000 model tape recorder to its line of imported electronic equipment. The unit sells for $160 and contains such features as Dia-pilot impulse transmitter
1966 Martel Electronics, importer of Uher tape recorders and accessories, is releasing the new line of Uher Royal Stereo 8000E tape recorders. The new recorder, which can also be used as a tape deck, will consist of four-track stereo
1967 - Europe's first authentic car tape recorder, Uher's Snob 100. This is a mono-only record and playback unit which can also be used for domestic applications.
1975 - Uher of America Inc. tape recorders and accessories as well as the Lenco turntables marketed by the firm in the U.S., will be repped in Florida by Ed Firestone, Firestone & Associates, 285 NE 185th St., Miami 33179
1976 - Murray Kerdman & Assoc, has been named to rep the Uher of America lines in Southern California, including Uher tape products, Lenco turntables and Lencoclean disk care systems.
1984 - Uher's model 160 portable stereo cassette recorder is available with options for film dubbing, sync sound and remote control operation. Suggested retail price is $905

Uher and Martel are both still in business today although not selling reel tape recorders.
